Illustration of Alex Carlson

welcome to the site of an illustrator who enjoys the finer things in life… Like Bic pens.

I’ve been SUPER busy today doing everything except work at the office.

drawin’ in my sketchbook.  Some ideas for paintings or drawings id like to do.  I’ve been very curious to develop my backgrounds more the past few weeks seeing as nothing in my portfolio has any semblance of background or depth. (Not that thats always a bad thing.)

I had drawn these guys a few months back but never got a chance to scan them.  These started out as paint studies but later i went back into them with colored pencil to give them some detail.  Each one measures about 8×10 and you can come see them in person at Lorem Ipsum Books in Inman square Boston if you so desire.  These pieces are for sale, $35 a monster.

Some friends and fellow coworkers (and supreamly awesome designers) put on a paper toy show here in boston this past month.  Wes of Phidias Gold designed the paper toy rabbit and about 30 artists put their own spin on it.  It was a lot of fun!  See more from the gallery show and other paper toys here:

I’ve been trying to get back int oa groove of drawing everyday, even if its just something mundane.  It didnt help that i left my sketchbook at home while i was in CT this week.  Either way, here are 2 quick observation drawings done with a felt tip pen.  Enjoy!

A great band and good friends of mine, Emily Peal will be setting out on tour next month!  I’ve done a few posters for them in the past and love getting new work from them.  You can check out Emily Peals website for upcoming shows new releases and all that good stuff. (www.emilypeal.com)

I’ve also updated my portfolio page to display a spread of the up to date work ive done for the band.

Its nice to do things i forgot i enjoyed doing.  Band flyers and posters have always been a love of mine.  Walk into my apartment and you will see the extent of my collection.

I did this one for a local band here in Boston, check out the show if youre in the neighborhood.

All the line work was done by hand in ink, the background was done in photoshop, and all text was done in illustrator.

Restoration is something I have never done, so when i was asked to try my hand at the restoration of a beloved statue for a bar downtown, I was apprehensive to say the least.  The Green Dragon Tavern in downtown Boston was a second home for me through the months of working as a bike messenger.  Stanley, the Red Coat soldier that stood outside, was an icon of the small cobblestone street.  A few months back during a warm summer night, Stanley has his arm ripped off by a drunk trying to take his gun.  After an attempt to repair it was expanding foam and gorilla glue, the Green Dragon asked me to try my hand at fixing him.  Aside the terrible condition of his arm, Stanley was riddled with gouges, chips, and scratches.  After about six hours of filling in, sanding, and painting, Stanley may not be the picture of perfection, but he’s certainly better then before.  All of his repairs were made with Liquitex light molding paste, painted with acrylic paint, and then varnished.

i think ive only missed 2 games all season.  I’ve physically been in TD garden for a meager 2.

I love hockey.  I used to play hockey.  I cant ice skate to save my life anymore and it silently kills me.

But hey, i can draw.  This goes out to the Black & Gold.  (maybe it’ll be a good luck drawing!)

Watercolor and acrylic ink.

But never too cold for skulls.

the two decks were both done on old skate decks with acrylic paint and ink.  The Hipster bird skull was done in ink and watercolor on Bristol.  Also, i need a scanner.  Can you tell?

as always, click for a more detailed view.
