Illustration of Alex Carlson

welcome to the site of an illustrator who enjoys the finer things in life… Like Bic pens.

a sneak peak into a few things recently.  Both are some sketches for two painting i want to do.  If they dont turn into paintings, i at least want to color them digitally and make some nice looking prints.  We’ll see, things are still to crazy to even sleep sometimes.

Things have been soooo busy the past few weeks.  My gig at converse has me working hard designing kids shoes in the Star Chevron line.  I cant really share anything right now, but now its cool.  I drew the Hindenburg today for work.  Paid silly drawing time?  Yes please!

things have been moving a little fast here on my end of the world.  I havnt been doing a huge amount of new work (at least not that i can post right now) but im getting ready for a 4 person show (!!) on july 30th with space 242 along with gearing up to start an internship with Converse on monday.

in the meantime, my great roommate zach helped me out today taking some photos of a few of my cardboard guys and i must say, they have never looked so good.

Last night marked the last class related obligation i will ever have to college.  the communications department of the class of 2010 at Massart held there senior show/open house last night.  It was a good time, lots of people came, more then i expected.  I talked with many students, teachers, art directors, companies, and gallery owners about my own work and their businesses.  It made me very excited for the future ahead.  It seems so funny to me one of the best responses i get to my work are my bug eyed drooling cardboard cutouts.  I had  a man ask me if i had more then the lonely three at my table so not only did i add a page here dedicated to them, but enjoy below the expansive family I’ve created.  Most of them in that picture have found homes and many more have been added since that picture was taken.  My apartment is more theirs then mine!

to the illustration class of 2010 and all the students i’ll be heading off into the world with, congrats and i hope to see you around!

only about 3 weeks left here at massart.

How am i feeling?  very overwhelmed.  Every time i turn around i have to spend another wad of money on printing or graduation gowns, or tickets, or trips to prepare for my brother wedding.  Trust me, Im not complaining about any of that, it all means its one step closer to moving on to life after college.

I’ve been painting a lot more recently.  I’ve never enjoyed acrylic paint until i did the circus poster series seen in my portfolio.  I think it goes along way to do something for myself rather then rush for a class.  Im working on an assignment right now for my experimental class that i think is going to come out well.  i need to finish it tomorrow, so we’ll see how that rush goes.

Everything right now feels so huge and insurmountable; but i know i’ll get through it.  If i were a mile from the top of Everest, i certainly wouldn’t turn back from sore feet.   There’s no way im going to turn away from school with 2 weeks of class left.

The Wild Boy knows my dilemma.

i sometimes hope the world is more afraid of me then i am of it.

it dawned on me last week during passover that im graduating in like 4 weeks.  Which means i need to have my portfolio done, printed, and set up in like 3 weeks.  I have a considerable amount to do.

First step towards success is the half completion of a mailer.  The other two im not so worried about because I’m using existing images for them.  I still need my letter heads and resume layouts and alllll that fun stuff.  Looks like im going to have to get the lead out here.

im still not happy with the placement of the type, so i’ll screw around with that for awhile.  I think im going to keep one version black and white and do another in full color, colored in photoshop.

as always, click image for a bigger view.

In my experimental class we have a competition going on with the prize of cover for the Bike Bible and a freelance gig with them in the future.

I did mine twice, my first attempt was very off in dimensions somehow and kind of boring.  Im not sure how they’ll feel about this, heres to hoping though.  Recognize the character? haha.  It’s never bad to recycle good ideas. :-)

Collage, acrylic, and watercolor.

well crap.

I’m apparently really bad at keeping up on stuff like this.  I’ve done more work then i could ever think to post right now, so i’ll just start from the most recently finished.

this was done for a competition (that i did not win) for a graphic for bay state bike week.  No one has a sense of humor when they need one.

a study of a skull. The next drawing i do for degree project will somehow reflect this. I like the linework, im a bitch for brush tip pens.

One part of an ssignment for my conceptual drawing class. I dont have a picture of that (though i will) but i liked the skull and took a picture. la-dee-da.

a detail shot from my first degree project piece. Im still working on it to make it as perfect as i can. The darks will be darker, color will look better. The whole thing measures about 16x20inches and is done in graphite, ink, and soft pastel. My degree project is about the Wild Hunt in Scottish Myth. A procession of beasts and spirits that round up damned souls and take them to hell of use them as soldiers in the hunt. Really its just devolved into a reason for me to draw skulls.

two things to put up today, once ive been meaning to put up since the summer.
this first one is a drawing i did while listening to the oh so wonderful Deftones (go figure). It’s drawn from the song Change In The house of Flies and was done in pen, highlighter, and colored pencil.
the original drawing measures about 11×14 inches.

this second one was the first project for my typography class. (word and image) we had to create a font based off of our own hand writting, then make it consistent by tweaking ligatures, kerning, arms, x-heights, ect. When done with that we used a descriptive word to blow up and fill in with an illustration of the word. The word is about 7 inches high and 38 inches long. Entirely done by hand with prismacolor fine liners over the course of a week.

peace out ya’ll.

i have ridden the moon worm.
